Pitch usage

Walking football strolls into Sudbury

People in Sudbury will soon have the opportunity to take part in a slower version of the beautiful game.

Walking football is a craze sweeping the UK, and weekly sessions will soon be held at Ryman League Club AFC Sudbury’s Wardale Williams Stadium. The games will be played on the club’s new state-of-the-art 3G pitch which is now being laid and will be ready for use in August. 3G is an all-weather surface using synthetic fibres and rubbers to look, feel and react like grass. The surface was recently used at the Woman’s World Cup, where England finished third.

The club is now urging anyone interested in taking part in the walking football sessions to register their interest.

AFC Sudbury director Richard Instance said: “We are really excited to be adding walking football to the various weekly activities which will be held at the stadium once the 3G pitch is open for use.

“Walking football is a fast growing sport with people all over the country getting involved, so we are delighted to introduce it to the people of Sudbury.

“The sport is much harder than it looks and it is a great way for people to keep fit and healthy. We are now urging teams which would like to participate in walking football to contact us so we can get them booked in.”

Walking football is a variant of association football with the key difference being players are not allowed to run and will concede a free kick if they do so. Sliding tackles are banned to avoid injury and originally the game was played without goalkeepers, although this is now optional. The only other difference is the ball is not allowed above hip-height. The sport was devised, during 2011, by the Chesterfield F.C. Community Trust. Following significant media coverage several other clubs took up this version of the game and it is now played all over the country. The manner in which the sport is played promotes cardiovascular fitness whilst producing the least stress on the body making it accessible to all age groups.
